LOS ANGELES - The authentic, annual LA tradition of Brazilian Carnaval erupts on Saturday March 5, 2011 at Club Nokia/LA Live, transforming the multi-level dance floor into a true Brazilian party in Downtown LA. This BRAZILIAN BLOWOUT offers its LA audience the once a year opportunity to indulge their senses and lose themselves in a pulsating sea of samba, Afro-Brazilian contagious rhythms, sequins, masks and feathers. Brazilian food and drinks are served to fully round out the evening. Costumes are encouraged! Carnaval, the annual celebration before Lent, is the most famous holiday in Brazil and has become an event of huge proportions. The country stops completely for almost a week and festivities are intense, day and night, mainly in coastal cities.
Catch the Carnaval sensation and mingle, misbehave, shimmy and dive in to the contagious beats of an All Star band curated by Chalo Eduardo (performed with Sergio Mendes, Santana, Mickey Hart, Ricky Martin) featuring top notch musicians playing classic Carnaval hits all night long. The band includes: Katia Moraes Andrea Ferraz, Carla Hassett (vocals), Hector Torres, Kirk Brundage, Will Philips (Percussion), Joe De Sa (Guitar), Sandro Rabel (Keyboards), Antonio Carlos de Sant’anna (Bass/Vocal), Chalo Eduardo (Percussion/Vocals), Leo Costa (Drumset) and more. DJ Chris Brazil will spin additional Brazilian dance music between sets. A 100 piece community drum circle will participate in a thunderous grand finale that includes audience participation. Video visual environment by Mexico City’s Leonardo Bondani (performed with Moby, Deep Forest, Lila Downs, Mexican Institute of Sound) will include a Rio Carnaval simulcast.
The largest and most extravagant Carnaval on the West Coast, Brazilian Nites Carnaval has consistently sold out, drawing a crowd of 3000+ for the past 10 years. This music and dance spectacle is an authentic demonstration of Carnaval dance, costuming, parading, live Brazilian dance music, drink, food and drawing for a free trip to Brazil courtesy of Korean Air.
Enter the Sambodrome and surrender to the Brazilian beats of Samba, Capoeira, and participatory Carnaval Parade dances! Heating up the dance floor will be the Brazilian Nites Samba Dancers, directed and choreographed by Joany Macias, hypnotizing with their sensual and elaborate samba steps in feather and sequin micro costumes and Capoeira, the acrobatic martial arts dance. PLUS sessions of en masse dance floor choreography, caipirinhas, Brazilian arts and crafts, Havaianas, and giveaway souvenirs of Mardi Gras beads, tambourines and shakers.

When & Where
Brazilian Nites Productions
Patricia Leao, a former dancer, founded Brazilian Nites Productions in the midst of the lambada fever in 1989. The husband-and-wife team from Burbank started the production company with the main purpose of advancing the lambada dance through contests, instruction and shows. Over time, the company expanded its scope and now aims to promote the numerous facets of Brazilian culture, music and dance.
Brazilian Nites Productions has been successfully organizing events since its inception, bringing people of different ages and nationalities together to experience the allure and character of Brazilian culture. The company produces several shows each year, including two annual events: the Brazilian Summer Festival at the John Anson Ford Amphitheatre and L.A.’s Brazilian Carnaval at the Club Nokia in February (formerly at the Hollywood Palladium and Queen Mary). The Summer Festival is a co-presentation with the Los Angeles County Arts Commission and is part of the Ford Theatre’s Summer Season, while the Carnaval celebration is self-presented.
Brazilian Nites has presented Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Elba Ramalho, Daniela Mercury, Olodum, Djavan, Gal Costa, Maria Rita, Grupo Revelacao, Fundo de Quintal, Beth Carvalho among others.
